Red: Mas Grand Pagniol Costières de Nîmes 2004

Régis Bernaleau bought Château de Braude in the 1980s, replanting parts of the vineyard that had not produced fruit since the phylloxera blight in the 19th century. Most of the land lies within the Margaux area. However, he reserves the Margaux name for Château Mongravey, a line he created when he consolidated several small holdings. Six hectares are planted with the classic Bordeaux varieties, with Cabernet Sauvignon predominating to give wines of great fruit intensity and exceptional finesse.

Château de Braude is a blend of 45% Merlot and 55% Cabernet Sauvignon. It has a powerful aroma of fruits (black currant and berries) with spicy oak tones. On the palate this wine is round and balanced with a great structure of fruit, oak and tannin. It can be kept 7 to 10 years.

White: Domaine Joel Delaunay, Sauvignon Blanc, 2005

The Touraine is a sprawling, varied region in the Loire Valley that gives rise to an impressive variety of wines. As one might imagine, some corners are more privileged than others. The village of Pouille, where the domaine of Joel Delaunay is located, enjoys a higher elevation and better exposure than the surrounding villages. This is the most likely explanation for the consistent superiority demonstrated by its wines in comparative tastings.

The Loire Valley wines have always enjoyed tremendous popularity in France, especially in Paris. To generalize, they tend to be vivid, fresh and juicy, often with less alcohol than other regions. They are also traditionally made from single varieties, which are often stated on the labels. Sancerre and Pouilly Fume have always been the most popular wines from the Sauvignon grape. It is our belief that this tangy, round and vibrant wine is quite the equal of many of its more famous and expensive cousins. Thierry Delaunay (Joel's son, who has run the domaine for many years now), has a master's touch with Sauvignon, and knows how to conjure all of its musky, aromatic possibilities in a wine that is bone-dry and moderate in alcohol. It is a perfect match for shellfish and grilled fish, and it has a striking affinity for asparagus and spinach too.
