Warning: Please make sure first that the address where you would like your order delivered is in a State where such deliveries are legal. See our delivery map.

The descriptions found below are the ones our members will find with their monthly shipment of two bottles of fine wine from the French Wine Club.

Red: Château Bellevue 2005

The Château de Bellevue is located in Saint Trojan, which is part of the “appellation contrôlée” Côtes de Bourg. It is one of the prettiest regions around Bordeaux, with hills and trees overlooking the Gironde River. It also was one of the first region of wine production around Bordeaux. Haut-Médoc, Graves, Pauillac, etcŠ have acquired a better reputation with time. Château Bellevue belongs to the Duteau family. They produce the wine according to the Bordeaux tradition in this area, but also with modern techniques.

This blend is made of 60% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Malbec. Château Bellevue has a beautiful rubis color, the nose has aromas of red fruits with a spicy note. The tannins are ripe, rich and soft, pleasing the palate. 2005 was a very good year in all French vineyards. Château Bellevue is ready to drink, but no later than 2010.

White: Chapelle St Barbe 2005

The appellation “Anjou contrôlé” found on this bottle means that only Chenin Blanc grape can be used in this specific area of the Loire Valley. Nearby, and a step or two up the ladder of quality, the Côteaux du Layon area within the Anjou region (between Angers and Saumur) produces white wines from the same grape.  Chapelle St Barbe is produced by Guillaume Roussy near the village of Nueil/Layon.

This wine has been called “Grande expression de Chenin”. Indeed it is a fine example of what this grape can give when it grows at the right place (clay limestone) with what we call “La douceur Angevine” (the softness of Anjou, so named because the climate is very mild). No wonder the kings of France built many castles in this area and loved to spend time there. This white Anjou wine vinified and matured in barrels still carries the mark of oak, with notes of ripe fruit and citrus.
