Red: Domaine La Millière 2003

Label Wine of the Month May 2005 RedJust outside the boundary of the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation area, Michel Arnaud crafted this lavishly fruited specimen from extremely ripe Merlot grapes in 2003.

Effusing notes of blueberries, fresh-roasted coffee, baked earth and “garrigue” smell of the countryside, this medium-full bodied red also has hints of chocolate, blackberries, root beer, and molasses. The level of complexity here comes entirely from the earth and the fruit, not a sliver of oak besmirched this plumy beauty.

Enjoy this Merlot from the South of France with grilled meats or strong cheese. Aging potential 5 to 7 years.

White: Chardonnay du Bugey, Domaine Plantaz 2001

Label Wine of the Month May 2005 WhiteThe Bugey region is located where the Jura mountains and the French Alps meet, ranging in altitude between 900 and 5400 feet. The Bugey is one of the oldest wine-producing areas of France, making wine since at least 388 B.C. Around that time, the Gallic tribe in the area (the Allobroges) became recognized as a good wine-making people, its fame crossed the Alps and soon the tribe started exporting to Rome.

Domaine Plantaz is a 100% Chardonnay. It has a pale yellow color with greenish accents. It is surprising for its white flower aromas such as &#!47;Mirabelle” (wild cherry) and lime flower (silver Linden tree). It is round and full in the mouth, mineral at the end, fully revealing the /terroir”.

Enjoy it with white fish, poultry and goat cheese.
