The Alary family has been wine growers for 11 generations in the area of Cairanne and Orange, north of Chateauneuf du Pape. Denis is the latest in the long line of vignerons that took control of his father's winery about 6 years ago. Though Daniel is still welcoming visitors who show up in the cellar.
La Grange Daniel is composed in more or less equal parts each of the usual Rhone grapes of Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Counoise, and an unexpected, not too common to the area, Cabernet Sauvignon from 45 years old vines. Perhaps there was an admirer of the Bordeaux area somewhere in the family.
La Grange Daniel is deep crimson in color, medium to full bodied and fairly chewy. Flavors of just under-ripe blackberries, red and dark plums, spicy black pepper, dried herbs, leather and graphite, or pencil lead minerality. Serve with hearty braised meats on a cold winter night or with grilled foods when spring and summer arrive.
