Red: Château de Marmorières La Clape 2003

The vineyard of “La Clape” is located in Languedoc, near the city of Narbonne. It is a specific terroir shaped as an amphitheatre overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. 600 years ago it was an island, planted with beautiful forests. Since the 14th century, however, it has become attached to the main land and vines have replaced trees. The Pyrenean alluvia carted from the source of the river slowly attached during centuries "the island of Clape" to the continent.

As a result, this green solid mass lost its insularity at the same time as it lost its forests, wood being used for the construction of ships and the exploitation of limekilns. Since this calcarous solid mass bears the name of &#!47;Clape”, which means “stone Heap” in Occitan language, the name has stuck.

Château Marmorieres has been a family operation for 7 generations. At this time, Countess de Woillemont owns it. This wine is a blend of 60% Syrah, 30% Grenache and 10% Carignan. After carbonic maceration, it is kept in stainless steel vats for 12 months and is lightly filtered.

This is a full-bodied red with silky tannins. It is loaded with fresh ripe fruits and sweet spices. It is a good accompaniment to red meats, especially lamb.

White: Château Haut Rian 2004

Michel Dietrich left his native Alsace and came to the Bordeaux area with a solid knowledge about wine. He acquired Château Haut Rian on the edge of the Entre Deux mers region.

The Château's production of dry white wine is labeled simply “Bordeaux Blanc sec”, and is made from 35% Sauvignon Blanc and 65% Semillon. It is planted predominantly in calcaire limestone soils. The grapes are harvested in the cool early morning air and fermented entirely in stainless steel tanks. Michel bottles the wine within six months of the harvest to preserve its freshness.

Château Haut Rian is a lively, clean, crisp and delightfully fruity blend of Bordeaux Blanc sec with lovely citrus notes and a lush, lingering finish.
