Red: Marcelan 2007

Domaine la Condamine l'Eveque is a pioneer Languedoc estate located in the sleepy hamlet of Nezignan l'Eveque. It was taken over by Guy Bascou in the 1960's. Bascou is a legendary figure in Languedoc, having spearheaded the creation of the varietal wines that have been the basis of the Languedoc's modern resurgence. Long a professor at the University of Montpellier, he taught a generation of Languedoc wine-growers, all the while running a testing laboratory that is the leading such establishment in the region.

Now semi-retired, he has landed over the reins of the domaine to his son Guillaume, who had proved to be a very apt student with several good ideas of his own. One of these was to plant the Marcelan, a fascinating grape created in 1961 in the nearby town of Marseillan. A crossing of Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache, it has one of the most remarkably purple colors in the world of wine. Its flavor is curiously unlike either of its "parents" being exceptionally spicy and deep, with a noticeable tannic bite. In the ideal 2007 vintage, this wine achieved a perfect balance of fruit, tannin and alcohol. The proximity of the vineyards to the Mediterranean Sea results in a pleasing lack of alcoholic heat with no loss of fruit ripeness. This is an original and exceptionally tasty wine.

Rosé: Touraine Rose “Les Cabotines” 2008

This is a marvelously stylish pink wine from the Loire Valley produced by Joel Delaunay. Gamay, of course is well known as the grape of Beaujolais, though with a strong foothold in the Loire Valley as well. Pineau d'Aunis, however, is as resolutely a local grape as can be imagined, being grown nowhere else to our knowledge. When red, it is curiously pale, with a powerfully earthy, almost musty flavor that is not to everyone's taste. But as a rose it makes a much more "normal" wine, especially when co-fermented with Gamay, as it is here.

What differentiates this wine fro the sea of southern roses that dominate the market is its coral color, zingy nose and fresh, tangy flavor. Good Loire wines always seem to be clearer in their earthy expression than others, and this is no exception. Relatively light in alcohol' it is a suave, sprightly and simply delicious rose.
