The location of Chateau Routas, in the heart of Provence, is spectacular, half-way between the French Riviera on the Mediterranean coast and the foothill of the Alps. It is surrounded by tiny medieval villages that cling to steep cliffs and overlook miles of beautiful hillsides, woods and rivers.
The owner of Chateau Routas is Sir David Murray, a Scotsman. He has had a passion for wine over many years and has amassed a wonderful private cellar. As an entrepreneur and chairman of Murray International holdings, with annual revenues of hundreds of millions dollars, you would think he would just create a wine empire. Instead he kept it a small winery with heart and soul.
Jean-Louis Bavay, the head winemaker, was one of the first employees at Chateau Routas in 1992, having worked at prestigious wineries such as Domaine Ott and Domaine La Tour Sainte Anne. He has degrees in both viticulture and oenology.
The Chateau Routas vineyard, Infernet, is named after a famous site called Trou de l'Infernet (literal translation: Hellhole), a geological formation 210 feet deep by 1200 feet wide. The devil is reputed to live there. While he has not been seen, scores of scientists have been, some looking for traces of early man, others for underground caves.
Chateau Routas Infernet is a vibrant blend of Grenache and Syrah. It has hints of eucalyptus and mint chocolate, a deep ruby color with aromas of ripe plums, spices, Provence herbs and subtle raspberry flavors. It is perfect with meats, pasta, and soft, complex cheeses.
