Red: Château Cahuzac, Fronton, 2004
Château Cahuzac comes from the Côtes du Frontonnais, which are located in South West France, North of the city of Toulouse. The Ferrand family has owned this vineyard for 500 years, long enough to have more than mastered the local terroir.
The genius of France, and what differentiates it from other great and even older viticultural societies, is its unique proliferation of local grape varieties associated with particular regions or terroirs. These traditional combinations are often founded on centuries of history and experience, resulting in time-proven relationships that result in arguably the greatest combinations of grapes and soils in the world.
Château Cahuzac is made of an unusual grape called the Negrette 50%, Cabernet Sauvignon 25% and Syrah 25%. The result is a minor miracle of French Country wine, deceptively simple and yet hiding lots of nuances for those interested to look. It is a well-balanced wine with subtle hints of black current, prunes and blackberries that should be drunk young.

White:
Vouvray sec 2004
Francophiles who wish to state the claims of France against the rising tide of New World wines can point to several instances where a particular grape variety manifestly reaches its greatest heights in France and nowhere else.
Chenin Blanc is a perfect example of such a grape. Widely grown thoughout the world as pleasant but of unmemorable effect, in the Loire Valley it can achieve sublime heights equal to any other noble variety. Savenieres, Quart de Chaume, Coteaux du Layon, Montlouis and Vouvray all give rise to wines from Chenin Blanc (also known as Pineau de Loire) that can stand alongside the greatest whites in the world.
One particular advantage that Chenin possesses, in common with Riesling, is the ability to yield every weight from feather light to mighty, and every level of sweetness from the austere to liquorous. Throw in the inimitable sandalwood and incense aromas that it conjures from the tufa (volcanic limestone) soils that predominate in the great Loire appellations, and you have one of the most thrilling syntheses that exist in the world of wine.
Vouvray is probably the most celebrated Chenin Blanc in the world. As is often the case with famous appellations, growers sometimes rest on their laurels and do not challenge themselves to make truly great wine. But not so Vincent Raimbault, a thoughtful, serious man, who took over the family domain 25 years ago and has lifted it to great heights. 2004 was an unstraightforward year for Vouvray, but his fastidious work in the vineyard enabled him to gather a healthy crop of grapes whose style lent themselves to a textbook dry Vouvray.
The Vouvray of Vincent Raimbault is faintly herbaceous, surprisingly mouth filling and already showing some of the hallmark perfumes of the Loire Chenin. This is a forthright, bracing wine, well suited for shellfish, with the ability to develop in bottle for several years.
