The Touraine region is a sprawling expanse in the middle of the Loire Valley that encompasses such famed appellations as Chinon, Vouvray and Montlouis. It is also the epicenter of a quality revolution that is making unprecedentedly good wines for very modest prices at hitherto-unknown vineyards.
The Plouzeau family has been at the forefront of this movement for several years. Francois was one of the very first biodynamics producers in all of France in 1989. His brother Marc, owner of the family's Chinon property, Chateau la Bonneliere, has now made the conversion to this increasing practice.
This marvelously gusty red wine, which is essentially a declassified Chinon, is testament to the quality that is now being achieved, especially in such a legendary vintage as 2005. With the unmistakable earth and raspberry tones of the native Cabernet Franc bursting from the glass, it is an uncommonly well-endowed and honest wine, which will happily accompany red meat and strong cheese. And don't be surprised if it ages gracefully in the bottle for 5-10 years, too.
