Red: Les Devants de la Bonneliere, Touraine 2005

The Touraine region is a sprawling expanse in the middle of the Loire Valley that encompasses such famed appellations as Chinon, Vouvray and Montlouis. It is also the epicenter of a quality revolution that is making unprecedentedly good wines for very modest prices at hitherto-unknown vineyards.

The Plouzeau family has been at the forefront of this movement for several years. Francois was one of the very first biodynamics producers in all of France in 1989. His brother Marc, owner of the family's Chinon property, Chateau la Bonneliere, has now made the conversion to this increasing practice.

This marvelously gusty red wine, which is essentially a declassified Chinon, is testament to the quality that is now being achieved, especially in such a legendary vintage as 2005. With the unmistakable earth and raspberry tones of the native Cabernet Franc bursting from the glass, it is an uncommonly well-endowed and honest wine, which will happily accompany red meat and strong cheese. And don't be surprised if it ages gracefully in the bottle for 5-10 years, too.

White: Colombard / Chardonnay, Yvon Mau 2006

Convinced of the bright future of Bordeaux wines, Aristide Mau set up his own trading company in 1897. History proved him right. His trading house today belongs to the very exclusive club of one-hundred-year-old companies. His son Yvon Mau was constantly on the lookout for new wines and used to travel around the Bordeaux vineyards on his bicycle. In homage to this "Grand Monsieur of wine", the company adopted his name and used his silhouette of a penny-farthing bicycle as its emblem.

I usually stay away from wines chosen by vintners, but this blend of 50% Chardonnay and 50% Colombard offers something remarkable. I found it easy to drink, fruity and deliciously refreshing. In any case, the origin of the Colombard is from the Cotes de Gascogne as this grape was used before to distill the famous Armagnac.

Paradoxically, this wine was received in wooden boxes usually reserved to the high end Bordeaux wines, but is bottled with a screw top!
