The Syrah from Guilhem Durand comes from the Corbieres region near the city of Perpignan. It is a "vin de Pays de Hauterive". French law does not allow the varietal to be noted in conjunction with the appellation.
The vineyard is located in a mountainous area with a soil made of quartz and large pebbles. The wine is fermented in stainless steel and left on fine lees for 4 months prior to bottling.
It is a complex wine that will pair with strong cheeses, braised meat, and even well seasoned grilled poultry. In 2007, Guilhem Durand outdid even his usually exemplary performanceŠ the wine is wonderfully concentrated. It displays brown spices, sweetly-ripe cassis, black cherry and purple plum that retain a refreshing brightness.
