The Premières côtes de Blaye are found on the right bank of the Gironde river. It is one of the oldest vineyards planted near Bordeaux. Château Peyraux is owned by the Rey brothers, who got it from their grand-father.
The vineyard is rather small, at 7 hectares. Its particularity is its blue clay soil. According to Guy Rey, it is this freak outcrop that accounts for the very spicy flavors and curiously soft texture of the wines.
The Château Peyraud is a blend of 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc and 80% Merlot. The wines of Peyraud are soft and spicy, sweet tasting and aromatic. It is perfect for consumption within 3 years of the vintage. The 2005, however, presents a more robust core of mineral flavors and tanins, but Peyraud's hallmark softness and wild strawberry sweetness are beginning to peek through.
