Red: Domaine des Lones, Coteaux du Tricastin 2004
The Coteaux du Tricastin is a relatively new appellation, but located in an ancient wine-growing region dating back to Greek times. Directly to the North of the southern section of the Cotes du Rhone, and a few miles south of the fabled Syrah-growing region of the North, it is an area capable of making wines of high class. It benefits from a rocky, sloping soil and from generous sunshine, like the rest of the Rhone valley.
In 1964, Henri and Odette Bour chose this then unknown area as the place to establish their domaine, having been forced to leave their colonial home in Algeria. They quickly forged a reputation as the best producer in the area. Henri, alas, died prematurely, and his widow carried on the estate with a now legendary determination. She herself died in 2002 at a ripe old age. By then she had handed over the reins of the domaine to their son, also called Henri, who has kept Domaines Bour at the forefront of the appellation. It routinely garners top awards at the local wine fair.
Domaine des Lones is the name of the lower vineyard in their estate, which enjoys shallow soils in full view of the Rhone River. The wine it produces is a blend of three classic Rhone varieties: Syrah, Grenache and Cinsault. It boasts a ravishing scent of briar and spice, while the palate offers the pepper and richness one expects in this region. What lifts it out of the ordinary is an unusual elegance and sense of restraint, allied to a silkiness of texture that causes the wine to slide gratefully down the gullet. This is a wine to be enjoyed over the next three years with meat and cheese.

Viognier, Laurent Miquel 2005
The Miquel family has been running its estate since the French Revolution (1789), when they took over from the local monks at Foncaude. Laurent Miquel is based at Chateau Cazal Viel, the family estate in the St Chinian appellation (Languedoc). Laurent is following in his father's footsteps and continuing the tradition of wine making and vineyard management. The name of Nord Sud is given because the vines are planted on a North-South axis to maximize sun light.
This Viognier is grown on a calcareous soil with large stones. It benefits from the Mediterranean climate. It exhibits a golden yellow color with pale green highlights. It is redolent with honeysuckle and peach aromas, but with accompanying acidity on the palate for balance. This successful 2005 vintage is to drink now, so you taste all its freshness and long finish.
