The descriptions found below are the ones our members will find with their monthly shipment of two bottles of fine wine from the French Wine Club.

Red: Mas Grand Plagniol Costieres de Nîmes 2005

2005 was a famously good vintage year throughout France, and nowhere more so than in Rhone. A perfect succession of climatic circumstances culminated in a wonderful Fall. The resulting wine has all the richness of the familiar 2003 vintage, with an added degree of freshness. Currently, the delicious strawberry tones of Grenache speak loudest. But experience suggests that the Syrah will eventually sing its siren song on top.

Roger Mares is the producer of this wonderful wine made of equal parts Grenache and Syrah. It is to me very representative of what the Southern part of Rhone can offer. Thanks are given to the climate and to the wine maker for this simple blend that will satisfy our palates.

White: Macon-Prisse 2005

The house of Emile Boeckel was established in Mittelbergheim (Alsace) in 1853. The Boeckel family actually traces its roots here back some 400 years. Their cellars are known for the unique miniature railway line that they built to transport barrels, bottles and equipment through its myriad tunnels.

All wines bearing the "Réserve" label, such as this one, come from Boeckel's vineyard. Interestingly, this wine is actually made from a cousin of the Pinot Blanc called Auxerrois. It is a little known fact that this varietal is actually more widely planted in Alsace than the "real" Pinot Blanc.

From it, Thomas Boeckel makes a marvelously sleek and minerally wine, juicy and perfumed, with none of the heaviness and sweetness of some Alsatian wines. It makes for an excellent aperitif wine, as well as partnering with trout and other river fish to perfection. It is also capable of surprisingly long aging, ten years or more.
